He really needs the uv for the full 12 to 14 hours you have it on through the day. With the 10.0 strength uv strip for this amount of time, this is only equivalent to about 20 mins in the sun  As you can see this isn't really enough but the best we can do as it's the highest one you can buy. So you see the importance of him having access to it for the whole time it's on whether he is basking or cooling down.

Putting platforms in your viv sounds good, just be careful this doesn't provide any 'hiding' places (on the viv floor) away from the uv and heat as beardies sometimes like to hide away even though it's not good for them

As for the wacky idea of getting another beardie - please, please think carefully before getting another beardie especially if you plan to keep them together at some point. First of all how long is your viv (sorry if you've put this on a prev post)? A 4 foot viv partitioned off would give only 2 foot of space each which is no way enough for one beardie. One beardie needs at least a 4 foot viv especially when fully grown. If you plan to put two beardies together at some point then remember male and female will breed (possibly alot) resulting in babies to care for and find good homes for. Two males will fight to their death and two females may or may not get on depending on whether a 'pecking order' is agreed between them at an early stage. We have had quite a few people on this forum buy two beardies and have to re-home one of them further down the line because of problems.

Have a look at www.uvguide.co.uk they have some great info. on UV and various lights. You may want to pm Hadesdragons (Andy) as I believe he's been working with mercury vapour lamps and may be able to assist as really the basic strip light is going to be useless in a 4' high viv.

Why dont you half it the other way so you have 2 vivs that are 6ft long but only 2ft high therefore they get the right uv / temps.

You could always get a another beardie, a snake or even a water dragon etc for the second half.

i had thought about that but im happy with just him.

i lowerd his uv and fitted it with a reflector, it now sits 10"-12" from where he spends most of his day.

im going to intergrate it into my new rock wall when ive finished building it

If I had a 8ft viv 4ft high I'd buy an Iggy or Tegu for sure.

mine is 6ft long

ive never keen on iguanas i went to college at an agriculture college studied animal care for 3 years so you would think i would know about beardies but they never kept them. and i panick with mine lol
They had a male and female iggys in a 12ftX12ftX12ft enclouser, the male was huge his body was just over 3ft and then his tail which was just as long. but he was a brute, a real nasty bugger so that kinda put me off for ever. i shouldnt paint all iggs withe the same brush beacuse i know they can make excellant pets.

as for tegus they are lovley surprisingly friendly for there size but i just think somthing that big needs to be kept in somthing thats as big as say a small bedroom. and funny enough i have just come back from argentina where some of there species live naturally
