Hi all
I havn't picked our beardie up yet as the pet shop is waiting on a supply of vivs coming in. The pet shop owner has told me that a 3ft viv is suitable and i noticed on his list for the set up he includes a heat mat. We have a corn snake who is also waiting on a new viv coming, so the heat mat will be handy for his viv. Why include a heat mat, are they cheaper than a ceramic heater? I think i will pay him a visit and ask him to change to a 4ft viv for the bearded dragon.

Yes to make more money. I lot of places are letting you 'customise' the set up and then give you a price, which is better, but sometimes its cheaper to buy everything seperate.

A heat mat should in no way replace the heat bulb in the viv (through the day I mean)as you wouldn't get the right sort of heat from a heat mat and beardies need to bask from a bright white light from above (to mimic the sun). Heat mats are dangerous to BD's as they have no feelings on their stomachs and are therefore are at great risk of accidently burining themselves. Heat mats are used with plenty of other reptiles and I think pet shops that sell reptiles just don't understand that not every peice of equipment works well with all the animals that they sell!

Incorrect you will need a 4ft viv as a bare minimum size for an adult. They need about 8 sq. ft of floor space so you are really looking for a 4 x 2 setup. If you can't get that then a 4 x 1 1/2 will just do. Don't let them tell you anything smaller will be OK.
